Depression test

Nine questions about the last two weeks. PHQ-9 is the most widely used questionnaire for a first check of depression.

Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by the following?

Your answers stay in your browser: we do not store or send them anywhere.

  1. Little interest or pleasure in doing things
  2. Feeling down, depressed or hopeless
  3. Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping too much
  4. Feeling tired or having little energy
  5. Poor appetite or overeating
  6. Feeling bad about yourself: that you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down
  7. Trouble concentrating on things, such as reading or watching TV
  8. Moving or speaking so slowly that other people could have noticed, or the opposite: being so fidgety or restless that you moved around a lot more than usual
  9. Thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself in some way

How to read the result

  • 0-4Minimal signs. There are almost no signs of depression. Everyone has bad days, and that is normal.
  • 5-9Mild signs. Mood and energy are somewhat low. Watch yourself for a couple of weeks and sort out sleep and workload. If it does not pass or gets worse, see a doctor.
  • 10-14Moderate signs. Low mood is already affecting your life. With this result please see a psychiatrist or a medical psychotherapist: depression is treated by doctors, and treatment works well.
  • 15-19Moderately severe signs. This is serious. Please see a psychiatrist or a medical psychotherapist soon.
  • 20-27Severe signs. This is a severe state. Please do not put it off: see a psychiatrist or psychotherapist in the next few days.

About the test

This test helps you understand how you are doing, but it is not a diagnosis. Only a doctor or psychotherapist can diagnose after a conversation.

I do not work with depression, thoughts of death or self-harm. If your result is high, the test will tell you where to turn.
